Choose the kind of protection first; the best product depends on it.

Our answer

The best endpoint security software for a small business in October 2026 depends on which of three kinds you need, and only then on the product. Across all 17 products we track, Bitdefender GravityZone Business Security has the highest SMB Fit Score, 78 out of 100. If someone on staff or at your MSP will act on alerts, the top EDR product is Microsoft Defender for Business; if nobody will, the top product with 24/7 managed response included is ThreatDown Elite. Picking the wrong kind costs more than picking the second-best product of the right kind.

As of 2 Oct 2026 we track 17 products here, priced $30.00 to $179.99 per seat per year at 10 seats at list. Highest Fit Scores: Bitdefender GravityZone Business Security (78/100, $38.50 per seat per year at 10 seats); ESET PROTECT Core (77/100, $54.90 per seat per year at 10 seats); Microsoft Defender for Business (75/100, $36.00 per user per year at 10 seats).

Fit Score measures fit for a small-business buyer from public evidence, not absolute protection. Lab tests: filled = result within 18 months, outlined = older, dotted = no public result. Prices are list, per seat per year at the fleet size selected; Microsoft is licensed per user. “Min N” means the smallest purchase is N seats; “Via sales” means that fleet size is above the vendor's online maximum. What is endpoint security software?

Endpoint security software runs on each laptop, desktop and server and protects that device from malware, ransomware and attackers. For a small business it comes in three kinds, and they differ in who does the work when something is caught:

Kind What it does Who acts on alerts Products tracked Lowest list price per seat per year, 10 seats Ranking
Business antivirus (EPP) Blocks known and suspicious files before they run Nobody needs to: it blocks on its own 9 $30.00 Best antivirus
EDR Records activity on each device and flags attacks in progress, so a person can investigate and contain them Your IT person or your MSP 8 $36.00 Best EDR
EDR with 24/7 managed response (MDR) EDR plus the vendor's analysts, who watch and respond around the clock The vendor's analysts 3 $99.00 Best managed response

The ranking above mixes all three on one score, which is useful for seeing the whole market at once. To choose, read the ranking for the kind you need. The difference between EDR, MDR, XDR and antivirus is explained in full in its own guide.

Which kind of endpoint security does your business need?

Your situation Start with Why
Under 25 staff, no IT person, no regulator asking for incident evidence Bitdefender GravityZone Business Security Antivirus works without anyone watching, and a console nobody reads adds cost, not protection
Microsoft 365 business with someone technical in-house Microsoft Defender for Business EDR in the admin tools your staff already use, at $36.00 per user per year
No IT staff, but you want attacks investigated, not only blocked ThreatDown Elite Managed response puts analysts on your alerts at night and at weekends
An MSP already runs your IT Huntress Managed EDR Built for MSPs, with no Huntress minimum when an MSP buys it
You handle patient health data HIPAA BAA register Few vendors offer to sign a business associate agreement, so that decides the shortlist first

How do endpoint security solutions that look alike differ?

On a feature list, most of these products look the same. Four things separate them in practice:

  1. Who answers the alerts. This is the dividing line between the three kinds, and the most expensive one to get wrong.
  2. What you pay at renewal. Several vendors discount the first year and renew at list price. Every price on Endpoint Index is the list or renewal price, per seat per year; the cost report shows totals at 10, 25 and 100 seats.
  3. Whether anyone has tested it recently. Independent lab results separate the products less than you might expect, and some of the best-known products have none from the last 18 months. The lab results scorecard shows every product's latest round.
  4. The smallest and largest order. A seat minimum can force a small office to pay for licences it does not use, and online stores stop at a ceiling. The seat minimums tracker lists both for every vendor.

How much does endpoint security software cost a small business?

Across the products that publish a price, list prices at 10 seats run from $30.00 (Webroot Business Endpoint Protection) to $179.99 (SentinelOne Singularity Complete). 4 of the 17 products publish no price and are sold on quotes. The SMB endpoint security price index covers many more plans than the ones ranked here, with a dated screenshot behind every price.

What should you check before buying endpoint security software?

  1. Decide who will act on alerts, by name, before you look at products.
  2. Trial the product on your oldest working computer and count false alarms on your own software.
  3. Confirm every operating system you run, servers included, is covered by the licence you are buying.
  4. Get the renewal price and the auto-renewal notice period in writing.
  5. If you hold regulated data, have the vendor's written position on the relevant agreement (such as a HIPAA BAA) before you install anything.

Questions buyers ask

What is the best endpoint security software for a small business?

It depends on which kind you need. Business antivirus suits an office with nobody to watch alerts, EDR suits a business with an IT person or MSP to investigate them, and EDR with 24/7 managed response suits a business that wants the vendor's analysts to do that. The ranking on this page shows the highest-scoring product overall and links to the best product of each kind.

What is the difference between endpoint security and antivirus?

Antivirus is one kind of endpoint security. Endpoint security is the wider category, which also includes EDR (detection and response) and managed detection and response, where analysts watch your devices for you.

How much does endpoint security cost for a small business?

It depends on the kind of product and the number of seats. The cost section on this page gives the lowest and highest published list prices at 10 seats, and our cost report gives annual totals at 10, 25 and 100 seats.

Do small businesses need EDR, or is antivirus enough?

Antivirus is enough for a small office with no one to investigate alerts and no regulator asking how incidents are handled. Once an IT person, an MSP or a compliance duty is involved, EDR or managed response is the better purchase.

Why are some well-known products ranked low?

The SMB Fit Score rewards a published price, easy buying for a small business and recent independent lab results. Products that are sold only on quotes or have no lab result from the last 18 months lose points for that, which says nothing about how well they protect.

How we rank

Products are ranked by the SMB Fit Score (fit-v1), a published formula over sourced fields: independent lab efficacy (35 points), price transparency and level (25), SMB operability (25) and capability coverage (15). It measures fit for a small-business buyer, not absolute protection. How to read lab results. Terms such as EDR, MDR and seat minimum are defined in the endpoint security glossary.
