Executive summary

A seat minimum is the smallest number of licences a vendor will sell in one order, and for most business endpoint security it is one seat or five. The outlier is Huntress: bought direct or through a reseller, Managed EDR starts at 50 endpoints, while through an MSP it has no minimum. The other limit that catches small offices is the top of the online store: ThreatDown's store stops at 20 devices and CrowdStrike Falcon Go at 100, and above those you buy through sales or a partner. Figures come from each vendor's own store, calculator or price list, last checked on 2 October 2026.

From each vendor's pricing page, store or calculator, as recorded in the SMB endpoint security price index. Above the largest quantity priced, vendors send you to sales or a partner. Where every sale goes through a partner (SentinelOne), the range is the one the list price is shown for, and the partner may sell outside it. Huntress's 50 applies direct and through resellers; through an MSP it sets no minimum.

Microsoft, CrowdStrike Falcon Go, Avast, AVG and Acronis sell a single seat. Bitdefender's calculator starts at 3 devices for Business Security and 5 for Premium, ESET's at 5 for PROTECT Core and 10 for PROTECT Premium, and ThreatDown's store at 5.

Why does a seat minimum matter for a small office?

A minimum above your head count means paying for seats nobody uses. A 10-person office buying Huntress Managed EDR direct pays for 50 endpoints, five times its need; the same office buying through an MSP pays only for what it deploys. The Huntress pricing page shows the band rates, and the cost report shows what each product costs at 10, 25 and 100 seats with minimums applied.

Packs work the same way. ESET Small Office Protection, Norton's small business plans and K7 Business Security sell fixed packs, so an office between pack sizes pays for the next pack up.

Where do online stores stop?

Most vendors sell online only up to a ceiling and send larger orders to sales or a partner, where the price is quoted rather than listed:

Vendor store or calculator Largest online order
ThreatDown 20 devices
ESET 99 devices
Bitdefender, CrowdStrike Falcon Go, SentinelOne list price 100 devices or endpoints
Microsoft 300 users
Avast and AVG 999 devices

A business near a ceiling should check whether the quoted price above it is higher or lower per seat, and whether staying under it means two separate contracts.

How do you avoid paying for seats you do not use?

  1. Count users and devices separately. Microsoft licenses Defender for Business per user with up to five devices each; most rivals count every device. A 10-person office with 25 devices pays for 10 seats with Microsoft and 25 elsewhere.
  2. Buy through an MSP when a vendor's direct minimum is high. Huntress sets no minimum through an MSP.
  3. Prefer seat-priced products to packs when your head count sits between pack sizes.
  4. Check the store ceiling before you grow past it. Crossing it moves you from a listed price to a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy business endpoint security for one computer?

Yes. Five of the vendors in the table above sell a single seat, Microsoft and CrowdStrike among them. If your first choice starts higher, check the smallest quantity column before you compare prices.

Does Huntress have a minimum number of endpoints?

Yes, 50 endpoints when you buy direct or through a reseller. Huntress says there is no minimum when you buy through an MSP.

What happens if I need more than 100 devices?

Most small-business stores stop at or below 100 devices, so you buy through the vendor's sales team or a partner instead, at a quoted price. Microsoft's online limit is 300 users, and Avast and AVG sell up to 999 devices online.

Methodology and caveats

Minimums and maximums are the quantities each vendor's own store, calculator or price list accepts, recorded in the SMB endpoint security price index with a dated screenshot. Where every sale goes through a partner, as with SentinelOne, the range is the one the vendor shows its list price for, and a partner may sell outside it. Vendors change store limits without notice; the price index records each change.
