Executive summary

For most small businesses the best SentinelOne alternative is Microsoft Defender for Business: it includes EDR at $36.00 per user per year, against $179.99 per endpoint per year for SentinelOne Singularity Complete, and it has current AV-Test and AV-Comparatives results where SentinelOne has none. Outside Microsoft 365, ThreatDown Advanced keeps EDR and ransomware rollback in one agent at $79.00 per endpoint per year. If nobody will answer alerts, ThreatDown Elite adds 24/7 managed response. SentinelOne stays the stronger choice for a practice that needs a signed HIPAA BAA alongside EDR, because few vendors offer one.

What pushes small businesses away from SentinelOne?

  1. Price. Singularity Complete has the highest published list price of any product we track, and SentinelOne Singularity Control, the entry EDR tier, is $79.99 per endpoint per year.
  2. Partner-only buying, no trial. SentinelOne shows a list price but sells every licence through partners, and its small-business page offers a demo, not a trial.
  3. The renewal clause. SentinelOne's master subscription agreement prices a renewal at 120% of the last order unless you give 30 days' written notice or raise a new purchase order.
  4. No recent lab result. SentinelOne has no AV-Test or AV-Comparatives business result since 2017 and skipped MITRE's 2025 round, so its latest independent result, 72 of 80 substeps on the first run of the 2024 MITRE round, is outside the 18-month window.
  5. No managed response at this tier. 24/7 managed response is not offered on Complete; SentinelOne offers it only from the higher Commercial tier.

Two gaps run through this group. Microsoft and Sophos carry current lab evidence; ThreatDown and Huntress do not. And rollback, one of SentinelOne's real strengths, is missing from Microsoft and Huntress, so a business leaving SentinelOne for either should test a full restore from backup.

When does SentinelOne justify its price?

SentinelOne Singularity Complete earns its price for a business that needs EDR, ransomware rollback and Linux in one licence, values FedRAMP High authorisation, or must have a HIPAA BAA, which SentinelOne says it may sign. The Is SentinelOne worth it? analysis and the SentinelOne pricing guide cover the decision in detail.

What should you do before your SentinelOne renewal?

  1. Find the renewal date and send written notice at least 30 days before it, or the 120% renewal clause applies.
  2. List what you use rollback for, and decide how the replacement will recover encrypted files.
  3. Check Linux and server coverage: Microsoft needs a separate servers add-on for them.
  4. Ask your SentinelOne partner whether a lower tier, such as Singularity Control, meets your needs before you migrate.

Methodology and caveats

Prices, capabilities, contract terms and lab results come from each product's page on Endpoint Index, every value sourced and dated. SentinelOne's renewal clause is quoted from section 11.1 of its master subscription agreement. Partners may quote below SentinelOne's list price; the comparison uses list prices because they are the only public figures.
