| What the assistant said | Verdict | |
|---|---|---|
| Defender for Business costs $3 a user a month on its own Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overview | Right | "$3.00 user/month, paid yearly" on Microsoft's plan card. |

Questions about Microsoft pricing
Is Defender for Business included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium?
Yes. Microsoft's plan comparison ticks "Microsoft Defender for Business" for Business Premium only; Business Basic and Business Standard leave it out, so on those plans you buy it separately.
How many devices does one Defender for Business licence cover?
Up to five per user. Microsoft's plan card says "Up to 300 users and up to five devices per user, with no minimum device requirement", so a person with a laptop, a desktop and a phone needs one licence.
Does Defender for Business cover servers?
No. Microsoft's FAQ says Windows Server and Linux Server need "an extra license", the Defender for Business servers add-on, "priced at $3 per server instance" (the FAQ does not say per month or per year). Above 60 servers you need an enterprise server licence instead.
Is there a free trial of Defender for Business?
Yes, for one month. Microsoft says the trial "will automatically convert to a paid subscription" when it ends and needs a credit card to start, so cancel during the month if you do not want to keep it.
Does Microsoft's HIPAA BAA cover Defender for Business?
Not on Microsoft's published list. Its BAA "covers in-scope Microsoft services", and neither Defender for Business nor Defender for Endpoint appeared on the HIPAA in-scope list when we checked on 30 September 2026. Ask Microsoft in writing before relying on it.
